A Report by Stephanie Rees:
As I write this, I am
procrastinating on two tasks: studying for my thesis defence and getting out
the door for a ski. READ ON!!

SLN World Cup Races - Training and Spectating |
|
Monday, 12 December 2005 |
|
Last weekend I spent time training on the trails at Silver Star Resort and Sovereign Lake Nordic Club (host of the recent World Cup races). The skiing was excellent, snow conditions were great and the weather was much more cooperative than it was in Alberta. The trails are fun to ski, despite the fact that they are all either a lot of work for the lungs (winding their way up the mountain) or the legs (screaming downhills). Watching the races was great. It was interesting to see how all the top racers ski in comparison to the Canadians. |

Training and Skiing in the Gatineaus (Ottawa) |
|
Saturday, 03 December 2005 |
|
After reading several NSXC.ca articles on skiing out west, I
decided that we needed some sort of report from out east… OK, from the Ottawa
area which is technically east of North Bay.
I can’t compete with the sheer size and almost overwhelming beauty of the Rockies,
but the Gatineaus do have a breath-taking beauty of their own. It is early
December and conditions continue to tease us. After three or four fairly good
days of skiing late in November on the packed and groomed parkway (after just 7
cm of snow!), we received what must have been record amounts of rain and one
day of a record high of + 17oC. In other words, within a couple of
days we went from ski conditions of just a few blades a grass and little
pavement showing to conditions of puddles you could water ski in. READ MORE (click below...)

Canmore Trails Open for Skiing |
|
Friday, 02 December 2005 |
|
After a lot of snowmaking the trails at the Canmore Nordic Center are open for skiing. It's still pretty cold here though! Expected high tomorrow is -16, overnight it is supposed to drop to -23. I spent the afternoon doing some pre-skiing and trying not to freeze to death! I'll evaluate the racing situation based on the weather tomorrow. Should be fun to watch the sprint race tomorrow - see which Canadians are making it to the upcoming world cup races. Click on Read More below to see the ski conditions. From Canmore AB, A.Rees

In the West to Train and Race |
|
Thursday, 01 December 2005 |
Well, here I am out west to train and race. Unfortunately the weather hasn’t been the most cooperative. Last week I was at Kananaskis Lodge for work (conference) and to get some skiing in. Similar to last time I was here to ski (March 05) there had just been a major melt-down. Temperatures in Calgary were around 18 degrees!! There was some skiing to be had (as in March) but it was on un-tracked backcountry trails. That did make for some fun skiing as weather was great, not ideal for getting in the km’s… Since the weekend I have been in Canmore, site of the upcoming Noram Races (Dec 3, 4) and World Cup Events (Dec 15-18). Until the other day there wasn’t a hint of snow. Now there is about 10 cm on the ground, the temperatures have dropped to -20 C, and they’ve been making a ton of snow at the Nordic Center. Luckily there have been great groomed tracks on Moraine Lake Road and Hwy 1A at Lake Louise (2 hrs of driving from here). I’ve been able to make it out there to ski a couple times. However, as I type the trails are getting worked into shape at the Nordic Center. It looks like the races are a go this weekend (although the courses aren’t open yet). Should be interesting… From Canmore AB – Andrew Rees |
